About NHS PhoenixNeighborhood Housing Services of Phoenix, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which provides a full range of programs and services to encourage, create and support homeownership for families in Phoenix and Maricopa County, Arizona. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of community residents, business professionals and government representatives. Our mission: Recognizing that increased homeownership rates result in an improved quality of life in the community, NHS Phoenix focuses primarily on creating new homeowners. We do this by providing homebuyer education, homeowner education, affordable single-family infill housing, and affordable mortgage loan products. Homeownership is considered a key element in developing a familys pride in and commitment to their community. This pride of ownership is necessary for maintaining viable schools, healthy businesses and safe neighborhoods. In 2007, NHS Phoenix assisted 1,484 families with homebuyer counseling and education services, graduating 204 from Financial Fitness classes. Ninety-three of our client families achieved their dream of homeownership within the year, five of them buying new NHS-built homes. NHS Phoenix helped to make financing possible by providing 27 loans. The impacts that NHS Phoenix has had on the community over three decades of service were measured in 2005 by J Michael Collins of PolicyLab Consulting Group. You can read them here. Several of our loan programs are targeted to assist families of low- to moderate-income buy their first home, but families of all income levels are welcome, and encouraged, to use our services. Our general service area is the City of Phoenix, although some mortgage loan programs serve the greater Maricopa County area. Our construction and rehabilitation efforts are targeted to Phoenix neighborhoods. NHS Phoenix was formed in 1975 with help from the City of Phoenix and the soon to be formed NeighborWorks® America. NeighborWorks® America is a national nonprofit organization that provides financial support, technical assistance, and training for community-based revitalization efforts in all 50 states. NHS Phoenix is a chartered member of NeighborWorks®.
Funds for our operating expenses come in equal part from contributions, grants, earned income and interest. Donations of vacant lots and vacant homes also help us to keep our houses affordable. There are many ways to help. We welcome the involvement of corporations, foundations, nonprofit organizations, government entities, and residents that share our commitment to strengthening our community.
