Her dreams outweighed her fears.
Perseverance, people, programs and partners build homeownership realities.

Regina Dorsey had already spent two years trying to find a home and qualify for a loan. She had worked on her credit, had a steady job and some savings. She had prayed that her boys would not grow up in an apartment complex. But she was a single mother of two - and this derailed and stalled her search at every turn. This did not weaken her resolve, however.

When she was referred to NHSP Regina was hopeful– and skeptical. Somewhere deep inside she expected her experience at NHSP to be "just like all the rest." She was wrong. And, isn't it lucky that her dreams outweighed her fears?

"At NHSP, the people welcomed me immediately," remembers Regina. After her initial meeting and interview, Regina decided to enroll in NHSP's HomeBuyer Education classes. "Right away this gave me the hope and courage I needed to go on. I had a lot to learn, and my classes were great. After awhile I had an NHSP financial counselor who helped me learn to manage my money. Then another counselor to help me with financing. I ended up qualifying for a new house and got to watch it being built. I mean it when I say this has been an unforgettable experience in my life."

An important part of Regina's NHSP experience is the people she met along the way. She calls them a "spiritual blessing." Even Regina's sons grew fond of the "nice people who built our house." Take Kelly Fisher of John Hall & Associates, for example. Kelly is part of NHSP's Realtor Partner program. Naturally this is an advantage for buyers like Regina. But Kelly is more than a Realtor, at least to Regina who calls her "the most unique treasure anyone could ask for." Kelly, like so many NHSP partners, works beyond the details of selling a home to the real business of building a homeowner and anchoring a family."

Regina's experience with NHSP was so rewarding and informative that she has become an advocate for low- and mid-income families who struggle with becoming homeowners. She knows a lot of single moms seeking adequate housing for their youngsters - many of them are her friends and associates. She understands their reasoning and fears. Since owning a home seems like such an "unreality" many would-be homeowners don't even try. They don't know where to begin. Regina tells them to begin with NHSP. Regina has experienced first-hand how the programs of NHSP and its partners fill a need the market place has overlooked and undervalued. Regina's is a story of the NHSP network, working at its best. It is the story of opportunity, often said to be "where preparedness meets luck."

"The prosperity and value NHSP returns to urban neighborhoods is what America is all about. NHSP is strengthening and sustaining the unique families of today," says Regina. And she means it.

Welcome home, Regina and boys! May your dreams always outweigh your fears.
